Summary: Quality Slow Jam.
About Artist: The World Famous Tony Williams is an R&B singer songwriter from the midwest. He first made it big recording vocals for songs on Kanye West’s debut album College Dropout (2004) including I’ll Fly Away, and Spaceship. He’s since contributed to songs on each of Kanye’s subsequent albums though is never listed as a featured artist even on songs where he is prominently featured like Roses. Listening to Tony Williams’ material you can see how much of an impact he had on the sound of Kanye West’s early albums. On Tony Williams mixtape Finding Dakota Grey (2010) is one of my favorite mixtape projects of all time. One of the songs from that tape was on gregshiphop back in 2010 here (Tony Williams – Nightmares). King Chip, formerly Chip tha Ripper, is a favorite artist of mine from Cleveland Ohio. Chip has yet to break through into the big time but he has his own style and plenty of talent. Here are 6 Chip songs that have been on gregshiphop before. I don’t know too much about Freddie Gibbs butI know he has quite a following and has been around for years now. His style is a little more the gangsta but he too is not without rapping talent. Kanye West is Kanye West. This song was producted by Bink! who produced songs on the Jay-Z’s original Blueprint, and did Kanye West’s Devil In A New Dress.
About Song: This song is originally off of Tony Williams debut album King or the Fool (2012). This remix adds verses by King Chip and Freddie Gibbs.

Favorite Part: I like the whole slow jam vibe that Tony Williams brings to the song but there are also a couple parts in particular I also really lik.

King Chip’s first verse sounds so smooth (0:40) and his second verse (2:50) is just as good.

I like the musical piano breakdown at 3:50.

And then Kanye just comes in at the end with his old school care free style.

Miguel – How Many Drinks? (ft. Kendrick Lamar)

DOWNLOAD MP3 Miguel-HowManyDrinksRemixftKendrickLamar.mp3
Summary: Sometimes I just want to be romantic. (Note: getting a woman drunk at the bar so you can take her home isn’t actually romantic)
About Artist: Miguel is an R&B singer from LA. While he’s been around since 2007 he’s only recently gained noteriety. He’s done a couple track wile Wale and J. Cole that I also really like. Kendrick Lamar is a staple on this blog so you probably already know all about the Compton native.
About Song: This song is the third single off of Miguel’s second and highly acclaimed album Kaleidoscope Dream.

Favorite Part:
Miguel’s voice just makes me melt. He even makes getting girls drunk at the bar sound romantic. Kendrick’s verse is just icing on the cake.

I like in chorus when Miguel sings “back of mind I’m hoping you say 2 or 3”

The music video below is kinda cool too

50Cent-WeUpftKendrickLamar
DOWNLOAD MP3 50Cent-WeUpftKendrickLamar.mp3
Summary: Escape to 50 Cent’s world of wealth.
About Artist: 50 Cent is the super famous ‘In Da Club’ Queens NY rapper turned business mogul. Kendrick Lamar is the new face of west coast hip hop and of ‘true/real/authentic hip hop’ (whatever that means).
About Song: This song is the third single off of 50 Cents 5th album due out mid 2013 titled ‘Street King Immortal’. It originally featured G-Unit rapper Kidd Kidd but he was cut from the final version.
Favorite Part: Both 50 Cent’s verse and Kednrick’s are pretty good. I like how Kendrick brags about his clean rap sheet. I mostly like the song because the rap and music just fit with each other, and I’ll admit to being a sucker for Kendrick Lamar.

DOWNLOAD MP3 ChinxDrugz-ImACokeboyftFrenchMontana.mp3
Summary: Shout out to Will of XXBC for getting this track stuck in my head.
About Artist: Chinx Drugz is a member of the group Coke Boys along with French Montana. French Montana, who was born in Morocco (who knew), is an up and comer who runs with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records and Rick Ross’ Maybach Music.
About Song:  This song actually has a pretty dope official remix with Rick Ross and Diddy but I’m trying not to promote Rick Ross since he is the embodiment of almost everything that is wrong with hip hop (though I’ll admit I like what he does in some of his songs) Anyway… this song is a couple years old but got renewed life with the recent remix.
Favorite Part: I really like the instrumental, and I like the way the song bangs. Nothing crazy on the lyrical side but it’s a solid song.

Summary: ¡Viva la Revolución!

About Song:  Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce recently went to Havana Cuba for their anniversary sparking a mini political media shitstorm from Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Pitbull, and White House spokesman Jay Carney. This song is a response to the criticism Jay-Z received for his trip.
Favorite Part:

I just like that Jay-Z is flexing his political muscle a little bit and making a song that’s relevant.

Summary: Mashup Madness
About Artist: I have no clue who Tom Caruana is but you can check out his site here. The Beatles are a rock group from the UK (maybe you’ve heard of them). Ol’ Dirty Bastard was a member of the Wu Tang Clan. Kelis is an R&B singer best known for her single Milkshake
About Song:  This song is a mashup between the Beatles ‘You Never Give Me Your Money” and “Got Your Money”. It is off of a project made by Tom Caruana called “Wu-Tang Vs. The Beatles: Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers” (a play on the album Magical Mystery Tour and 36 Chambers)
Favorite Part:
The mix itself is the best part. But I also really like the part at 1:28 where ODB finishes his verse and it goes into the chorus

Summary: Watch out! Justin Timberlake is sweeping the nation (again)
About Artist: Justin Timberlake… ya you know him. If you really live under a rock you can check out his wikipedia page below. The entire 20/20 Experience (Justin Timberlake’s new album) was produced by legendary and hip hop producer heavyweight Timbaland. Timbaland got start as a hip hop producer in the mid 90s and has worked with Everyone! He also produced JT’s last mega hit album FutureSex/LoveSounds.
About Song:  This is the first track off of the 20/20 Experience (and it certainly won’t be the last that I post here.
Favorite Part:
Just a solid track that encapsulates the FutureSex and now 20/20 sound.
Timbaland’s production on the whole album is fcking awesome.

As a bonus below is a lyric video (much better that the ‘real’ video) for the first single off of the 20/20 experience Suite & Tie which also features Jay-Z. The song is alright but This video really adds the style and flare to it.

Jared Evan – Pro Create (ft. Action Bronson)

March 22nd, 2013

DOWNLOAD MP3 JaredEvan-ProCreateftActionBronson.mp3
Summary: A little friday afternoon slow jam about love and sensuality. Lets make some music.
About Artist: (copied from a previous post I don’t know much about Jared Evan. I’d never heard of him before but apparently he’s a singer/songwriter from New York. Apparently his debut EP The 4th Chapter came out in 2012 and is definitely something I’m gonna go check out. You can read Jared Evan’s Wikipedia article here for more info. Lil Fame is half of the longtime famed hip hop duo M.O.P. who have been making music since the mid 90s. Statik Selektah is one of my favorite producers. The musicality and vibe he brings to his music really matches my taste and I always try to check out projects he’s been involved in. Check out more Statik Selektah from gregshiphop (mainly from this EP 1982 that I was obsessed with for a bit).
About Song:  This song was one of the singles from the just released collaboration album between Statik Selektah and Jared Evan titled Boom Bap & Blues.
Favorite Part:
I really like the chorus, especially at the little breakdown parts like
“We could put it all on tape, right here
Why don’t we just procreate, what we hear”
(at 0:52)

I also really like the second verse starting with
“put the plug in the socket,
you know I’m gonna rock it,
lets level out this EQ…”
(1:39)

Iggy Azalea – Work (prod. 1st Down of FKi)

March 13th, 2013

IggyAzalea-Work
DOWNLOAD MP3 IggyAzalea-Work.mp3
Summary: Something to get you over the hump this Wednesday.
About Artist: Iggy Azalea is a rapper from Australia. She first gained prominence when one of her promo songs Pu$$y went viral on youtube, which is a Iggy song that I also really like. While I do like a lot of the beats she raps on and she does have a lot of skills it sucks that basically she’s taken the route of marketing herself as a hypersexualized female body. I don’t know much about FKi but you can check out there youtube channel in the links at the bottom of this post.
About Song: This song is the single off of Iggy Azalea’s upcoming april EP also called work. Her debut album The New Classic is due out some time this summer.
Favorite Part:
I dunno what part I like best. I like the track and I like her rap. There isn’t one single part that really sticks out at me but I guess I really like the way the song was put together in the chorus and the way it flows from verse to chorus and back.

International Women’s Day

March 8th, 2013

internationalWomensDay
Summary: As per wikipeida “International Women’s Day, originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. ”

Below I’ve collected several youtube videos from Hip-Hop feMCs from around the globe. My knowledge or international hip-hop is sorely lacking so any suggestions of other foreign hip-hop females is more than welcome.

Hopefully the videos below show just how diverse and global the hip hop movement is and how Women in hip hop have such a important role than the sex objects they are allowed to play in mainstream American hip hop.

Happy International Women’s Day. #FuckThePatriarchy

March 8th, 2013

MIA-BadGirlsMNARSRemixftAzealiaBanksMissyElliott
DOWNLOAD MP3 MIA-BadGirlsMNARSRemixftAzealiaBanksMissyElliott.mp3
Summary: Wombyn Represent! Today is International Women’s Day, so I thought it’d be a nice time to reflect on how women are so under-represented in hip-hop, but also how Fcking Baddass some of those FEMCs are. Shout out to women across the world!
About Artist: M.I.A is a British artist with ties to Sri Lanka. Her music is all over the place with a cacophony of different sounds.  Basically she’s a badass and I love her. Azealia Banks is a somewhat underground young up and coming rapper/singer. Sadly there is almost no room for female hip-hop artist at the top but I hope she can rise through the ranks cause I think she’s super cool too. Missy Elliot is Hip Hop’s B-Girl Queen. While seemingly past her prime at this point (you know how women’s careers get shut down early) Missy Elliot still kills it. Dancing, singing, rapping, Missy Elliot does it all is one of the most positive female role models in all of hip hop (in my opinion).
About Song: This song was originally released last year and sparked a number of official remixes including this one.  The video for the original song was frickin awesome and I can’t say how many people wanted to show it to me when it first came out. You can really get MIA’s vibe from the video.
Favorite Part:
This remix is HOT! M.I.A. does her thing, Missy Elliot puts her style and attitude on the track, and then Azealia Banks comes in and just straight Kills It!

DOWNLOAD MP3 Wale-LetANiggaKnowftChinxDrugsFatzprodbyRicoBeats.mp3
Summary:  This is the fun high energy Wale that I love. Feel the beat.
About Artist: Wale is a DC rapper who was once one of my favorite rappers. He really makes two different types of music, the original playful kinda rapping and his new Rick Ross / Maybach Music gold chains and car rapping. I have no clue who Chinx Drugs or Fatz are. I’ve heard the name Rico Beats before and I’m sure he’s worked with a lot of artists but the only thing I remember him from is Nicki Minaj’s Roman Reloaded.
About Song: This song is one of the better tracks off of Wale’s 2012 mixtape Folarin which was really hit or miss with about 4 tracks that I really liked. (Bad, a song posted here a couple days ago, being another one).
Favorite Part:
I really like the beat especially in the pre-chorus in places like 1:27 where it then drops into the chorus. I just really feel the beat to this one. Plus I like the kind of obscured singing in the background track.

DOWNLOAD MP3 BoB-OutOfMyMindftNickiMinaj.mp3
Summary: Sometimes the world is so messed up it makes me feel Out Of My Mind  #EmbraceTheMadness. This is not new but a good song to jumpstart the week.
About Artist: B.o.B. is one of my favorite artists. Not only can he rap but he’s a complete musician. While his career has taken a sharp turn toward pop music I’m still a big Bobby Ray fan. Check out other B.o.B songs from gregshiphop (there’s a lot of them).  Nicki Minaj came from her hip hop roots to be one of today’s giant pop starts.
About Song: This song isn’t new. It is a track off of B.o.B.’s 2012 sophomore album “Strange Clouds”.
Favorite Part:
I like around 2:22 when B.o.B. is talking ending in “how am I supposed to pronounce this shit” right before the beat drops.
And the beat is just awesome!
