Kali Uchis – Not Too Late (Interlude)

March 26th, 2023

Summary: “Red Moon in Venus” on repeat!

About Artist: Kali Uchis is a Colombian-American singer who hit is big with her debit album “Isolation” (2018).  Her genre blending latin ne0-soul sound is hers alone and has gained her a loyal following.

About Song: This song “Not Too Late” is off of Kali’s third album “Red Moon in Venus” (2023). This album is sooooo good and deserves a full listen. I chose to put this song up but other tracks like “Endlessly”, “Moonlight”, and “Blue” are equally good.

Favorite Part: This song is just an interlude so it’s more about the vibes. I really like the little harmonies in the vocals and of course the little verse in spanish.

John Legend – Ooh Laa

March 18th, 2021

Summary: This is dedicated to that ooh la.

About Artist: John Legend has a voice of gold and face that makes butter melt. I’ve been in love with him since 2003 when I first heard live album “Live at the Knitting Factory”. He has a come along away but he still cranks out the hits.

About Song: This song is the intro track to his recent 2020 album “Bigger Love”. I had ticket to see him in the fall of 2020 but we all know how that ended : (

Favorite Part: I like the old-timey doowap track with the deep bass drop at 0:09. I like the prechorus build and the way the chorus blossoms (0:37). And of course I just love John’s sexy sexy voice.
“You know I’m romantic,
I’d cross the Atlantic for that, Ooh-laa
I’ll wear my best tuxedo,
And you can undress me and we go, Ooh-laa” (1:08)

Childish Gambino – The Night Me and Your Mama Met

December 27th, 2016

DOWNLOAD MP3 ChildishGambino-TheNightMeAndYourMamaMet.mp3
Summary: Instrumental break
About Artist: Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is an amazingly multitalented individual. I’ve been obsessed with him for years and his new TV show Atlanta is now one of my favorites.
About Song: This is an instrumental track of off Childish Gambino’s recent album “Awaken My Love” (2016). This album is so different than any other music he’s put out. While not all of the songs are instrumentals there is little of the rapping that has been the staple of his music output to date. I really really really like “Awaken My Love”.
Favorite Part: I love the vibes of this whole album. It blows me away that Childish Gambino stepped into this new musical space for the first time and made something so compelling. I also love the guitar on this song is by Garry Clark Jr, who I really need to check out more. The guitar on this song sings so beautifully and the song fits perfectly into the album.

Summary: A new classic. John Legend and Miguel make me melt.
About Artist: John Legend is singer/songwriter/piano player with a voice of god. He is one of my favorite singers, his voice just melts me. John Legend was first made famous by Kanye West, and had a hit freshmen album in “Get Lifted” (2004). Miguel is another R&B singer who I’m also in love with.
About Song: This song is a track off of John Legend’s 5th album “Darkness and Light” which came out on December 2nd 2016.
Favorite Part: I love how simple the song structure is. I love how sparse the intro is and how the song slowly builds as it progresses. I also am in love with John Legend and Miguel’s harmonies. I’m always a sucker for duets and to me this is one of the best. The song is so subtle and so beautiful.

Nas is still a top tier hip hop legend though.

Favorite Part: Love the horns on the track and the fact that hip hop icons like De La Soul have some super fresh music out.

Lupe Fiasco – Blur My Hands (ft. Guy Sebastian)

February 1st, 2015

DOWNLOAD MP3 LupeFiasco-BlurMyHands.mp3
Summary: Some uplifting Sunday music.
About Artist: Lupe Fiasco is hip hop royalty from Chicago. Though he’s “fallen off” in recent years, Lupe was blazing lyrical trails back in the mid 2000s. I don’t know that much about Guy Sebastian except that he’s an Australian singer and was the singer on Lupe’s Battle Scars
About Song: This song is the second song I’ve posted from Lupe’s 2015 album Tetsuo & Youth.
Favorite Part: This song doesn’t have the craziest Lupe verses but I really love the gospely hook, Guy Sebastian does a great job.

Summary: It’s almost Friday. Just Push! #throwbackThursday

About Artist: Is an old school rapper from New York, most famous for his song Simon Says. Pharoahe Monch’s first album, as a solo artist, was a classic “Internal Affairs” (1999). But it wasn’t until eight years later in 2008 that he released his second album.

About Song: This song is from that second album “Desire”. I got to see Pharoahe Monch perform at Rock the Bells in 2007 and I was blown away by his performance of the title track “Desire”. I also really love the remake of Welcome to the Terrordome that’s on the album.

Favorite Part: I like the soul elements of course. I love the horns my Tower of Power, and MeLa Machinko just kills it on the vocals. Pharoahe Monch’s powerful and always political raps are also great.

Also gotta love the George W shoutout at 2:05.
