About Artist: J. Cole is one of the reigning kings of lyrical hip hop.
About Song: This song is off of an EP called “Truly Yours 2” which came out in 2013 just before his second album “Born Sinner”. This song, like many of his, is also produced by J Cole himself.
Favorite Part: I really like the sample and the vibe J. Cole created in the production booth.
“B*****s saying: “You a rapper n****, ain’t you s’posed to tip more?”
I don’t see no pussy, baby, ain’t you s’posed to strip more?
Confessions of a cheap-ass n****
But I finally put my Momma in that E class, n****
And I told her quit her job, but hold your horses
If my next album flops it’s back to the post office, both of us, shit
They’re saying that’s a real possibility
The thought alone is killing me” (1:03)

“If we the new slaves

J Cole is a younger-ish rapper who has a diehard following and has been very well established ever since he signed with Jay-Z and released his blockbuster debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011. He is known for his lyrical ability and the way he weaves stories and scenes with his words. Major Lazer is a DJ goup anchored by the one and only Diplo
About Song: This song is just single that dropped in 2012. I recently saw a friend post it online and gave it another listen. It feels as real as it ever felt. Too much truth in this track : (
Favorite Part:
Major Lazer does an awesome job on the track, I really love the hook. The track is really really great… but the best part is J. Cole’s lyrics. The truth in his words are so powerful.

About Artist: Nothing to say today. This is just a good hip hop improvement on a pop song. About Song: This was a song I mean to post a while ago. Was probably bumping this most in December 2013 (maybe earlier?) This sons is just a better version of JT’s original TKO
Favorite Part:
Reminds me of the raw fcking power of just being in love.
JCole-ForbiddenFruitftKendrickLamar Audio Player DOWNLOAD MP3 JCole-ForbiddenFruitftKendrickLamar.mp3 Summary: #Summer2013 is a recap of the songs that made the summer of 2013 one of the best ever. Born Sinner was one of great albums this summer with Power Trip, Trouble, and Crooked Smile, Niggaz Know being some of the great songs on the albums. About Artist:J. Cole was a freshman in the rap game not that many years ago but with his diehard following he continues to climb to new heights. J. Cole is known for his storytelling style and quality albums. Kendrick Lamar, new king of the west coast, stayed hot this summer with songs like How Many Drinks, Robin Thicke’s Give it 2 U, Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe (with the Jay-Z feature) and his diss track Control (ft. Big Sean and Jay Electronica). About Song: Crooked Smile (ft. TLC) should probably hold this spot since it was a Born Sinner track that got considerable airplay but I just like this song was better. Forbidden Fruit is the third single off of Born Sinner but we’ll see how successful it is.
Favorite Part:
The intro with Kendrick singing “oh no” at 0:09.
JCole-PowerTripftMiguel Audio Player DOWNLOAD MP3 JCole-PowerTripftMiguel.mp3 Summary: #Summer2013 is a recap of the songs that made the summer of 2013 one of the best ever. The lead single off of ‘Born Sinner’. Check out the other three Born Sinner songs Trouble, Niggaz Know, and Forbidden Fruit that I posted(sorry I didn’t like Crooked Smile enough to post). About Artist: J. Cole was a freshman in the rap game not that many years ago but with his diehard following he continues to climb to new heights. J. Cole is known for his storytelling style. Miguel is a an R&B singer who also hit the stage in a big way this summer with songs like Beautiful, Come Here and How Many Drinks. About Song: While this single was released in Febuary the Born Sinner album was released the same day as Kanye’s Yeezus on June 14th. This summer was really a summer of great albums and Born Sinner was one of them.
Favorite Part:
Nothin in particular stands out in this song. I do like Miguel’s “Would you believe me if I said I’m in love…”
JCole-Trouble Audio Player DOWNLOAD MP3 JCole-Trouble.mp3 Summary: J. Cole at his best About Artist: J. Cole is about 4 years in as a mainstage artist after being the first artist to sign to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. He has a large hardcore following and this song might show why. He’s got the lyrical chops and can really tell a raw story in his songs. About Song: This song is off of J. Cole’s sophomore album Born Sinner and I can’t for the life of me understand why it’s not a single yet. Favorite Part: Yes, I’m a sucker for gospel singing in hip hop but I also love J. Cole’s story telling and his delivery in lines like
“But I’m back on track, jumpshot wasn’t that good
Couldn’t sell crack but I rap good” (2:31)
I can’t lie though the woman singing in the background around 2:46, and the choral chorus and Especially that outro I do love.
DOWNLOAD MP3 JCole-NiggazKnow.mp3 Summary: It’s been a minute but I’m back and I got some GREAT songs in the pipeline. About Artist: J. Cole is a fairly recent newcomer to the game but has already become of the most respected rappers around. His debut album Cole World, released by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, was met with critical acclaim. I’m not a the biggest J. Cole fan ever but he is definitely legit and I would agree that he is one of the best doing his thing right now. About Song: This song is a bonus track off of J. Cole’s upcoming sophomore album Born Sinner (due out June 18th). This song really proves why J. Cole has the hardcore fan following that he has. J. Cole’s lyrical ability, and personal raw story, is on full display on this track. And he produced the track? dayyum. Favorite Part: I just like how J. Cole tells a story in his verses. The chorus is good and soulful, but his line after line after line type verses are what really make this song something great.
DOWNLOAD MP3 BigSean-24kOfGoldftRaekwonJCole.mp3 Summary: A chill little riff on Nas’ If I Ruled the World. About Artist: Key Wane is the producer of the track. I don’t know much about him except that he’s a young guy from Detroit. I would encourage people to check out So Many Keys because while most of the tracks have already been released on other projects you can really get a sense of Key Wane’s sounds. Big Sean hails from Detroit and is a young rapper signed with Kanye’s GOOD Music. J. Cole is another young buck with a ton a skills and a diehard following. He comes from North Carolina and was one of the first artists to sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Raekwon on the other hand is the longtime New York legend from the Wu Tang Clan. About Song: This song orignally appeared on Big Sean’s late 2012 mixtape Detroit however I rediscovered it when it appeared on producer Key Wane’s collection called So Many Keys which I would highly encourage people to download. The song kinda plays off of Nas and Lauryn Hill’s hit If I Ruled the World. Favorite Part: I want to give Key Wane credit cause I really like the sound of song. The rap is just some nice dressing on top.
DOWNLOAD MP3 JCole-CantGetEnoughftTreySongz.mp3 Summary: Gregs Hip Hop is back. I didn’t know what the best song to get this started again with would be, but I thought why not this one. About Artist: J. Cole has been on a steady rise over the last couple years. J Cole grew is underground following with some great mixtapes (like The Warm Up) in the mid-late 00s until he became the first signee to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2009. Basically this dude’s got style, he can rap, and the ladies love him. For rapper in his generation he definetly comes off more old school with just raw talent and swag no gimmicks or shit. Trey Songz is the R&B (someitmes rapper) phenom whos also appeared on GregsHipHop a number of times. About Song: This one is the 2nd single off of J. Cole’s debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story which came out in the Fall of 2011. The song really gets an awesome vibe from it’s sample Paulette by Balla et ses Balladins Favorite Part: Of course the I frickin love the way the sample grooves (yes I have the instrumental version too). As far as J. Cole I think the first verse is the best with the following lines. “Now I ain’t got no kids yet, but this right here’s for practice I hate to get the seats in the Benz wet, but that’s how good your ass is Make an old man get his glasses, make Wesley pay his taxes Then follow your moves all week on Twitter, probably make a gay nigga reconsider”
and then “She calling, she texting, she’s falling, but let me explain Gotta tell your old boyfriend skate girl cause a nigga don’t play them ex games”
I also really like the end of the 2nd verse that goes “I love it when you give me head, I hate it when you give me headaches”
DOWNLOAD MP3 KendrickLamar-HiiiPowerprodbyJCole.mp3 THIS SONG HAS BEEN REMOVED DUE TO A COMPLAINT BY THE RIAA. Summary: Hip Hop. About Artist: Kendrick Lamar is part of the new west coast movement. Decades after Snoop, NWA, Tupac came out of Compton Kendrick Lamar it trying to lead a second wave, a rebirth, of LA rap. J. Cole produced this track, which is a little strange since J. Cole is better known as a rapper. About Song: This song is atypical of Kendrick Lamar who normally goes off with fast high intensity rhymes (check out other Kendrick Lamar songs on gregshiphop here). In this song however Kendrick Lamar takes a more reflective approach. One thing that jumps out at me about this song is how it borrows from Kanye West / My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy this song is. Kendrick borrows from Kanye’s So Appalled line “shit is, fuckin ridiculous” at places like (1:36, 2:48, 4:23), it takes Kanye’s signature “huh” around 2:00, and takes a voice effect that Dark Twisted Fantasy popularized at 2:05. Favorite Part: No part really jumps 0ut at me but I like message Kendrick Lamar puts forward over this protest beat.
