Summary: Yet another Banger. Get your big speakers out!
About Artist: Timbaland is a premier producer for both Hip Hop and Pop. He’s not known for his rapping although he makes an attempt in this hip hop song. Timbaland has has done production for people from Jay-Z to the Pussycat Dolls see a full list of Timbaland’s production here
About Song: This hip hop song is part of a weekly release that Timbalands been putting out. I like this song because it has a few good lines in it and, despite my dislike and boredom of recent Timbaland tracks, this one I really really like.
Favorite Part:
I really like the track that Timbaland created but I also kinda like Tim’s flow on this.

“I got a 2 million 35 carat grpah ring,
wife got the same thing
to me that’s a bling bling…” 1:56

“Vacations in the far east, somewhere near greece…” 2:18

Swizz Beatz – Top Down (ft. Nas)

March 5th, 2011

SwizzBeatz-TopDownftNas
DOWNLOAD MP3 SwizzBeatz-TopDownftNas.mp3
Summary: New York’s Finest (Nas) + Horns
About Artist: Nas is one of the great NY rappers. He used to be in a contest with Jay-Z for best NY rapper but it’s hard to say that Nas didn’t lose that one. That being said Nas is still one of the most respected 2nd or 3rd generation rappers. Swizz Beatz came up with DMX and Cassidy but has managed out live the both of them as he is one of today’s premier producers producing dozens of hit singles. Swizz Beatz also has been in the public eye more lately as he recently married, and is having a child, with Alicia Keyes.
About Song: This hip hop song is part of Swizz Beatz weekly release of songs called Monster Mondays (a ripoff of GOOD Fridays, me thinks so). This song originally didn’t have Nas and was featured in Grand Theft Auto, Nas really brings this well produced track to a song worth listening to.
Favorite Part:
The Horns…of course.
And Nas brings that gritty New York feel to it.

Chip Tha Ripper – Hang Out

ChipThaRipper-HangOut
DOWNLOAD MP3 ChipThaRipper-HangOut.mp3
Summary: Another one for you big speakers, Chip Tha Ripper Style About Artist: Chip Tha Ripper is a rapper from Cleveland with voice that makes the ladies melt (apparently). Chip is a few years into the game but is well positioned to launch into the mainstream. His most recent mixtape Gift Raps has been long anticipated and it doesn’t dissapointed. Google Gift Raps and get your copy, every track REALLY bumps. Check out other Chip Tha Ripper songs on gregshiphop.com here
About Song: This hip hop song is off of Gift Raps, Chip Tha Ripper’s brand new mixtape. Every track on the album can blow your speakers out so get some speakers, download the tape and ENJOY!
Favorite Part:
I like this one for the beat, and Chip’s voice. The Classic Chip Tha Ripper combo is an bumbing beat and his smooth voice. He does have some clever lines but his flow works even without rhymes or jokes.

Lupe Fiasco – Beautiful Lasers (2ways)(ft. MDMA)

March 2nd, 2011

LupeFiasco-BeautifulLasers2WaysftMDMA
DOWNLOAD MP3 LupeFiasco-BeautifulLasers2WaysftMDMA.mp3
Summary: This one’s a little depressing, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.
About Artist: Lupe Fiasco is one of the greatest lyricists of our time. Lupe cuts through all the bullshit and breaks the boundries of the genre. Lupe Fiasco has struggled with his label Atlantic Records in an epic battle over artistic direction that at one point looked like it meant that his upcoming LASERS would never see the light of day. Lupe has undergone a pretty radical transformation as he has pretty much forsaken the mainstream to speak his mind on personal and social issues through his music.
About Song: I might describe this song as a kind of Emo-Rap. It is consistant with Lupe’s recent space-age sound coupled with the 808’s and Heartbreak autotuneness that Kanye made popular a few years ago. This song is a leaked track off of LASERS Lupe’s much anticipated album coming out March 8th. BUY A COPY! A lot of people have very high hopes for this album and at the very least its release is a moral victory for the movement Lupe has built. Check out another song from LASERS on gregshiphop.com here
Favorite Part:
“Sometimes livin’ in a word like this,
it’s pretty hard not to go insane,
not pretty if you don’t comply,
pretty easy if you don’t complain..” 0:44

“no win when it’s me against me,
one of us ain’t gonna survive,
my heart been broke for a while,
yours has been the one keeping me alive..” 1:23

“This world’s such a fucked up place,
my mind’s in such a fucked up state
Everything down here sucks,
maybe what’s up there is great,
We all gotta go one day,
I just wanna cut to the chase” 1:59
I like the double meaning of “cut to the chase”

Ski Beatz – Super Duper Bad (ft. Rugz D)

SkiBeatz-SuperDuperBadftRugzD
DOWNLOAD MP3 SkiBeatz-SuperDuperBadftRugzD.mp3
Summary: Big Speakers Only! This beat bumps!
About Artist:Ski Beatz is a producer who started out as a member of Original Flavor which was one of the first groups to feature a young Jay-Z. Ski Beatz then went on to work with the newly formed Roc-a-fella records to produce Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z’s debut album. Ski faded for time after in the early ots but is back producing upcoming artists Joell Ortiz and Jean Grae as well as having produced all of Curren$y’s Pilot Talk. Check out other Ski Beatz songs on gregshiphop.com here
About Song: This track is off of Ski Beatz’s debut solo album 24 Hour Karate School. It came out in September after being pushed back due to clearance issues. The album was also going to include more features from Jay Electronica, Wix Khalifa and Cam Lo (all of whom he’s done production work for) but had to remove some tracks again because of legal reasons from the label. Regardless the album is really really good. It kinda reminds me of BlakRoc the production is awesome and has a really simple but solid style. This song is just one of the many songs that I really like off of the album, which I frequently listen to all the way through.
Favorite Part:
This song is all about the rockin bass. If you only have headphones don’t even bother listening. This site’s Hip Hop usually airs on the side of more lyrical songs (or songs with crazy instrumentations) but this is some a little different

Summary: Rap Rap Rap. This is how you rap!
About Artist: Kendrick Lamar is an LA rapper who has been recruited by Dr. Dre to help with Dr. Dre and LA rap’s comeback. No doubt Kendrick Lamar has crazy talent. At this point he is undoubtedly one of the best west coast rappers rapping right now. His mixture of aggressive and clever lyrics is unmatched as he brings such energy to his music. I would love to see him live. Check out some other Kendrick Lamar song on gregshiphop.com
About Song: This song was released as a youtube video as can be seen here. This song is a few month hold but just has such energy that I had to put it up. This song is definitely one where you’ll want to sit down with the Lyrics and follow as you listen.
Favorite Part:
You really have to look at all the lyrics while you listen but below are some highlight.

“I’m so appalled, with a prototype with a gotly protocol
you an amateur, they want to protocol

DOWNLOAD MP3 TreySongz-SkShitprodbySKMusic.mp3
Summary: Trey Songz can rap oh yes he can. For those that appreciate clever lyrics.
About Artist: Trey Songz is an R&B singer / rapper. He hit it big with his single Bottoms Up and Say Aah but he has so many more skills than those songs show. While he gets played on the radio as another autotuned hook singer he really can rap and has his own unique style to boot. If you wanna hear more Trey Songz from gregshiphop.com click here
About Song: This hip hop song is over half a year old at this point an was part of Trey Songz’ Twitter themed mixtape to show he does more than R&B called #lemmeholddatbeat.
Favorite Part:
“You see I am a major crash you just a finder bender

GIMME-PaperLinesftPhonte9thWonder
DOWNLOAD MP3 GIMME-PaperLinesftPhonte9thWonder.mp3
Summary: True and Honest Lyrical Rap about Hip Hop. For Hip Hop fans only.
About Artist: This song, recorded under the name G.I.M.M.E, was one of the very first collaboration tracks between Little Brother members Phonte and high integrety producer 9th Wonder. Both are from North Carolina and both being unmatched integrity to their music. If you’ve never heard of Little Brother I would definitely encourage you to go find a copy of Minstrel Show for some real honest hip hop.
About Song: This song was one of the first tracks created by Phonte and 9th Wonder in late 1999. This song was never released and just recently surfaced.
Favorite Part:
I like this song because of 9th Wonder’s jazzy no frills production but more Phonte’s true to hip hop tradition rap style and message.

“…create incredible words
I’m a federal felon with verbs
speaking for those who frequently talk but seldom get heard”
0:25

“I guess the point I’m makin rather elusively
is that this rap shit ain’t what it used to be
I’ve been written since before puberty…”
0:51

“(I put my lifetime in between the papers lines)
Cause most these niggas out rhyme horribly
(I put my lifetime in between the papers lines)
Can’t tell the difference between rap and R&B
(I put my lifetime in between the papers lines)
Everybody’s takin shots but nobody can score
(I put my lifetime in between the papers lines)
So many guest stars solo albums don’t exist anymore”
chorus 1:12

“What Hip Hop needs, to stop these, carbon copies
is less Rappers and more MCs
Cause MCs can hold it down do an album themselves
While rapper alwasy need a guest verse from somebody else
MCs stay true to themselves and rip for they peers
While rappers be doin duets with Britney Spears”
1:32

“…number one with a bullet but who the fuck is you targetin
not me, I left your on the shelf with a smile
shit was so whack my alarm clock slept on your style…
…Don’t get me wrong yo I ain’t player hatin
But I hate when players play with what I consider sacred
but it makes me mad, stark ravin”
1:52

“…our art form is slowly becoming awful” 2:38

“…the black magic is passed we need another shawman
you know to come and really rock the mic,
I mean the calm and proper type
quote me all you want shit rapper ain’t got no copyrights”
2:58

February 22nd, 2011

Lloyd-LayItDownRemixftBoBRockCity
DOWNLOAD MP3 Lloyd-LayItDownRemixftBoBRockCity.mp3
Summary: Pop Hop
About Artist: Lloyd is a Pop R&B singer. I generally hate the kind of music Llyod makes and I gotta say this song walks a fine line really close to the kind of song that drives me crazy (in a bad way). Rock City is some Caribean R&B duo, don’t know much about them. And then there’s B.o.B. who is the sole reason this song made it up here. If you don’t know, I love B.o.B and you can click HERE for more B.o.B. songs on gregshiphop.com
About Song: This song is a super successful single off of Lloyds next album which comes out in April, and just for the record I could care less about this album. There is also another remix of this song which features Young Jeezy and R Kelly which you can listen to HERE. This song is super repetitive which I don’t like but it IS super catchy and BoB’s part is pretty cool (like always).
Favorite Part:
Of course the best part is B.o.B’s part 0:30-1:10.

“I do not tap out, round two, round three,
cause I’m never going down like Muhammad Ali,
call me Cashis, when we hit the mattress
you be like oh yup (yup), baby call me randy savage (ooh ya)
you say you want me but be careful what you askin
causeI beat it up like delta does your baggage”
(0:53-1:10)
I like how the beat drops out here at 0:58.

1982 – Money Is Reality

February 21st, 2011

1982-MoneyIsReality
DOWNLOAD MP3 1982-MoneyIsReality.mp3
Summary: Some Chill Monday Rap. For Classic Hip Hop Lovers only.
About Artist: 1982 is a two man MC Rapper duo out of the Boston area. The MC, Statik Selektah, has worked mainly on radio stations throughout his career and has the classic turntable sound I love exemplified by DJ Premier and Funkmaster Flex. Statik Selektah really brings the sound and vibe to the group, which is the main reason I like them, so I’d say he’s what really makes the group special. The rapper, Termanology, also from the Boston area, looked like he would take off in 2005 when The Source featured him as an unsigned MC; he never really took off but he’s got more than enough talent to hold his own in the game.
About Song: This song is off of 1982’s recent EP the Evening News. This song features Action Bronson though I’ve never heard of him. I like this song because it mixes a laid back jazz sound with a traditional gritty city rap sound.
Favorite Part:
I really like the classic hip hop feel. The best verse is probably the first 0:42-1:30 but the second verse does have some real good flow.

Childish Gambino – Freaks and Geeks

ChildishGambino-FreaksAndGeeks
DOWNLOAD MP3 ChildishGambino-FreaksAndGeeks.mp3
Summary: Crazy Lryics. Crazy
About Artist: Childish Gambino is none other than the actor Donald Glover, who also writes for 30 Rocks. I just discovered him earlier this week then the other day my friend sent me this song. I am NOT a Donal Glover fan and I’m still on the fence about Childish Gambino but this track is crazy crazy.
About Song: Freaks and Geeks was released to promote Gambino’s upcoming, still unnamed, EP which drops in March.
Favorite Part:
I just discoverd this AWESOME SITE RAPGENIUS.COM it has the lyrics to the songs and you can click a line and it gives you and explanation of that line, it’s background, why its clever etc. Definitly check out the Freaks and Geeks Lyrics HERE

February 17th, 2011

Fashawn-MannyPacquiaoprodbyPhonix
DOWNLOAD MP3 Fashawn-MannyPacquiaoprodbyPhonix.mp3
Summary: Fashawn’s Higher learning his best mixtape.
About Artist: Fashawn is an underground rapper from Fresno California. He is one of Hip Hop’s most underrated much like his collaborators Blu, Exile and others. His debut album Boy Meets World was a great album but this tape is even better. Fashawn definitely deserves more respect for the consistently high quality music he makes.
About Song: This song is off of Higher Learning 2 which dropped yesterday and let me tell you THIS TAPE IS TIGHT. I highly recommend downloading it as it has another song that I posted on this site, Strange Fruit. This song clearly samples We Are the Champions by Queen but Phoenix did a great job on the production.
Favorite Part:
I love the production. There are a lot of good lines but my favorite might be…
“Never wanted to wear cleats,
just wanted to run the turf”

Saigon-ComeOnBabyftSwizzBeatzJayZ
DOWNLOAD MP3 Saigon-ComeOnBabyftSwizzBeatzJayZ.mp3
Summary: Saigon – The Greatest Story Never Told may be the rap album of the year.
About Artist: Saigon is a NY rapper who has spent a great deal of time in the New York penetentary system causing years of delays to his music career. His most recent album which just came out the other day has been in the making for years and is highly anticipated. I just finished listening to the album and it is REALLY GOOD. You can read more about Swizz Beatz and Jay-Z on their wikipedia pages (links below)
About Song: This song was the first single off of The Greatest Story Never Told and dropped in the summer of 2007 (it would be nearly another four years until the album was released). This is a shorter remix version with Jay-Z which was released on the album but you can listen to the original HERE there was also another remix with Jay-Z where Saigon raps different verses HERE. I actually think the lyrics of the original (and the other remix) are a little sharper but I posted the remix just because it’s the one that made it to the album. Both Asher Roth and Fashawn have used this same instrumental which I love and samples J. Geils Band’s Southside Shuffle (mp3 here). This is one of many Great songs that I’ll most definitely be posting from Saigon’s Greatest Story never told.
Favorite Part:
I really like the track that Swizz Beatz put together, and I understand why they made so many versions of the song. The guitar and singing in the background is awesome. There are also some good lines in these verses but I’d recommend also listening to the Original and the Other Remix for more lyrics.
