Summary: 4 DAYS UNTIL JANELLE MONAE!
About Artist: I’ve been wanting to post some Janelle Monae for a looong time now, like since August. Her recent album (her second) titled “The Electric Lady” is soooo goood. I’m absolutely obsessed with it, and have since become obsessed with Janell Monae, she is absolutely the best.
About Song: This is just one of many great songs that I’ll posting from the album here. Just listen to it. Power Up Power Up!

Summary: #Summer2013 is a recap of the songs that made the summer of 2013 one of the best ever. Sorry for putting a pop song up here (and one that’s so mainstream too)
About Artist: Lorde is a 16 year old Kiwi who came out of nowhere to have this huge summer hit. I didn’t realize the song would be so huge but a couple weeks after I heard it I started hearing it Everywhere.
About Song: Don’t know anything about it except that it was a huge hit and I like it. S

Favorite Part:

Just a good song.

Daft Punk – Lose Yourself to Dance (ft. Pharrell Williams)

June 1st, 2013

DaftPunk-LoseYourselfToDanceftPharrellWilliams
DOWNLOAD MP3 DaftPunk-LoseYourselfToDanceftPharrellWilliams.mp3
Summary: This one goes out to the Villa du Golfe crew!
About Artist: Daft Punk is a wildly successful electronic music duo. Other people probably know much more about them than I do, but from a hip hop perspective they were the ones that were sampled for Kanye’s Stronger. Pharell is one of hip hop’s super producers and he brings his smooth hook singing and distinct style to this song.
About Song: This song is from Daft Punk’s recently released Random Access Memories album. It is a great blend of Daft Punk and Pharrell’s sound.

Favorite Part: I just like the laid back style that Pharrell brings to the track. The song is very repetitive but it is a great summertime jam. This song will forever remind me of my trip to the south of France and the carefree ballerstastic vacation that I had. Great Food, Great People, Great Times.

Get Lucky, Icona Pop’s I Love It, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Sacrilege were also big theme songs of the trip.

Justin Timberlake – Suite & Tie (ft. Jay-Z)

February 7th, 2013

JustinTimberlake-SuitTieftJayZ
DOWNLOAD MP3 JustinTimberlake-SuitTieftJayZ.mp3
Summary: Basically a Pop song (sorry for all the recent pop) but I like style of it, Justin’s voice doesn’t hurt either. The video really adds a lot and in fact I didn’t really like the song at all until I saw the video
About Artist:  Justin Timberlake, ever heard of him? Formerly NSYNC, currently one of the sexiest men alive. Jay-Z reigning king of hip hop. And this song was produced by longtime veteran, heavy hitter, and music legend Timbaland. Each artist has their own dynasty of music so expectations for this song were pretty high.
About Song: It seems like this song will be a single off of Justin Timberlake’s hiiiighly anticipated upcoming album 20/20. The song isn’t extremely excited but the video adds a lot and you can feel some of Timbalands style on the beat.
Favorite Part: I just love hearing Justin Timberlake sing
“Let me show a few things”

“…Ass tight demin and some dunks.
I show how to do this young.
No papers, catch vapors
Gettin high, out in Vegas

Tell your mother that I love heExplainr cause I love you
Tell your father we go farther as a couple
They ain’t lose a daughter, got a son
I show you how to do this, hun!”
(3:49)

I also found it very interesting how the track switched up completely for Jay-Z verse and how much darker the sound and lyrically his part of the song was compared to  most of the song where Justin Timberlake’s is singing carefree.

ZZ Ward – Cryin Wolf (ft. Kendrick Lamar)

October 17th, 2012

ZZWard-CryinWolfftKendrickLamar
DOWNLOAD MP3 ZZWard-CryinWolfftKendrickLamar.mp3
Summary: If you liked BlakRoc you’ll love this bluesy song.
About Artist:  This is the first song of ZZ Ward that I’ve discovered but I’m downloading some of her mixtapes and past projects as we speak. Apparntly she did a cover of a Childish Gambino song and has worked with Pete Rock in the studio? I don’t know enough at the moment but I would say looking into more of her stuff is a must! Kendrick Lamar is like my favorite rapper right now. From LA etc etc just look at past posts of mine by Kendrick Lamar.
About Song: Is off her debut album which dropped yesterday called Till The Casket Drops (too soon after the Clipse’s album IMO). I’m about to listen to the album now but she seems very ‘Adele’ or ‘Lana Del Rey’ to me so far.
Favorite Part: I really really like the bluesyness, which is also why I LOVED BlakRoc. I like when it breaks down with the claps, I love ZZ Wards voice and harmonies, and of course Kendrick’s verse specifically this part

“Don’t forget about us, don’t forget about trust
Don’t forget about the kinkiness of playin with the cuffs
on the bedspring penetrate the loud screams echoin the hallways is a must”(2:30-2:40)

Selah Sue – Please (ft. Cee-Lo Green)

October 3rd, 2012

SelahSue-PleaseftCeeLoGreen
DOWNLOAD MP3 SelahSue-PleaseftCeeLoGreen.mp3
Summary: Soulful duet with the wonderful voice of Cee-Lo Green and Amy Winehouse sound-a-like Selah Sue
About Artist:  Selah Sue is a Belgium musician who found crossover American success with her song Raggamuffin as well This World (which I also like). Cee-Lo Green on the other hand is one of my favorite musicians. I guy who brings soul to everything he does he is quite famous as a solo artist at this point but has also put out music as part of Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley. Cee-Lo Green probably reached his pop popularity with his song Fuck You but he’s also had wild creativity and lasting integrity in the songs he puts out.
About Song: This song is off of Selah Sue debut 2011 self titled album.
Favorite Part:   I do like the sound of Selah Sue’s voice on this song but Cee-Lo’s magical voice is what really draws me to this song. Of course I’m a sucker for vocal harmonies so the duet factor doesn’t hurt either.

K’naan – More Beautiful Than Silence

March 14th, 2012

Knaan-MoreBeautifulThanSilence
DOWNLOAD MP3 Knaan-MoreBeautifulThanSilence.mp3
Summary: A softer song that anyone can enjoy. This is some international hip-hop as K’naan is a Somali-Canadian. I really like the musical elements in this song and fits K’naan’s style real well.
About Artist: K’naan comes from Somalia and after his song Wavin Flag became the official song of the 2010 World Cup we quickly became the most famous Somali artist. His fusion Hip-Hop is something a little different than what we normally got up here, a little more pop but you can’t deny this is a good song.
About Song: This is the title track off of K’naan’s Jan 31st EP More Beautiful Than Silence. The EP only has 5 songs, all pretty different from another, this one being my favorite.
Favorite Part: The track on this is just great got an awesome beat and some beautiful piano. Below is just the first part of the 1st verse.
“Ok, ain’t it funny how the talkers always talking?
Never firing, but always say they cocking
And they’re cocky until they end in parking lots
Suddenly they got Parkinson’s, they can hardly talk
No karate buddy, no pilates buddy
It’s a new game, no Atari buddy
Body chalk, well I’m used to bodies chopped
I’ve seen shit to give new meaning to the body shop”

Lupe Fiasco – I Don’t Wanna Care Right Now (ft. MDMA)

March 14th, 2011

LupeFiasco-IDontWannaCareRightNowftMDMA
DOWNLOAD MP3 LupeFiasco-IDontWannaCareRightNowftMDMA.mp3
Summary: Lupe Fiasco with that new Pop sound.
About Artist: Lupe Fiasco is one of the best lyricist of the the decade. He has respect throughout the Hip Hop community and commands a ravenous fan base. He’s always been about his lyrics and sending a positive message which got his new album delayed by nearly two years. Lupe’s new LASERS album is a kind of pop/emo album which saddens those who love Lupe performing a more traditional hip hop lyrical style, but while Lupe’s songs on LASERS have more of an alternative pop electronic sound, his lyrics still bite hard.
About Song: This song is one of the rare upbeat/happy tracks off of LASERS. In this track I swear Lupe sounds like he copied his style completely from K’Naan, a very different kind of artist from Somalia.
Favorite Part:
I’m Lupe, yes sir, who they
They yester, and I’m today, and tomorrow, hooray
Can I get a hip-hip for the new K-I-N-G, nigga I-AM-HE
Got the game in the clutch like I am G
You ball little boy, But I N-B-A
2:24 this part epecially sounds like K’Naan in the song T.I.A

Trey Songz – Sk Shit (prod. by @skmusic)

February 24th, 2011

TreySongz-SkShitprodbySKMusic
DOWNLOAD MP3 TreySongz-SkShitprodbySKMusic.mp3
Summary: Trey Songz can rap oh yes he can. For those that appreciate clever lyrics.
About Artist: Trey Songz is an R&B singer / rapper. He hit it big with his single Bottoms Up and Say Aah but he has so many more skills than those songs show. While he gets played on the radio as another autotuned hook singer he really can rap and has his own unique style to boot. If you wanna hear more Trey Songz from gregshiphop.com click here
About Song: This hip hop song is over half a year old at this point an was part of Trey Songz’ Twitter themed mixtape to show he does more than R&B called #lemmeholddatbeat.
Favorite Part:
“You see I am a major crash you just a finder bender
No contenders you so limber see I’m stiffted and my mistress
Is this rap shit I came in with my main bitch we live in peace and harmony
But this rap hoe flow so cold I swear its like she callin me
Fuck the way you thought of me I’m nothin like you thought I’d be
That’s even if you follow me” 1:45

“But I stay on the grind baby bad brakes haters
I’m the shit wont you tell me how my ass taste
Ricky bobby daddy say if you aint first you last place
Movin’ at a fast pace you niggas is butts call em ash trays” 3:08

Lloyd – Lay It Down (Remix)(ft. B.o.B, Rock City)

February 22nd, 2011

Lloyd-LayItDownRemixftBoBRockCity
DOWNLOAD MP3 Lloyd-LayItDownRemixftBoBRockCity.mp3
Summary: Pop Hop
About Artist: Lloyd is a Pop R&B singer. I generally hate the kind of music Llyod makes and I gotta say this song walks a fine line really close to the kind of song that drives me crazy (in a bad way). Rock City is some Caribean R&B duo, don’t know much about them. And then there’s B.o.B. who is the sole reason this song made it up here. If you don’t know, I love B.o.B and you can click HERE for more B.o.B. songs on gregshiphop.com
About Song: This song is a super successful single off of Lloyds next album which comes out in April, and just for the record I could care less about this album. There is also another remix of this song which features Young Jeezy and R Kelly which you can listen to HERE. This song is super repetitive which I don’t like but it IS super catchy and BoB’s part is pretty cool (like always).
Favorite Part:
Of course the best part is B.o.B’s part 0:30-1:10.

“I do not tap out, round two, round three,
cause I’m never going down like Muhammad Ali,
call me Cashis, when we hit the mattress
you be like oh yup (yup), baby call me randy savage (ooh ya)
you say you want me but be careful what you askin
causeI beat it up like delta does your baggage”
(0:53-1:10)
I like how the beat drops out here at 0:58.
